Best Club in 2008: South Beach Houston

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

best gay club in texas Imagine a club where before you even step inside you feel like you are taken away.  Taken away from the beautiful palm trees outside (no telling how many thousands those were) and the beauty of this club in general.  Then you walk inside (after waiting in a line on some nights) you enter a lounge area that is classier and more hip than some lounges you find in the real South Beach, Miami.  Step further and you enter the huge dance area of the club – largest dance area in Texas!  Bigger dance area than Station 4 in Dallas and any straight or gay club I have been to in Dallas, Austin, or Houston.

South Beach has boxes to dance on which make it more lively than some of the lame clubs that only allow hired gogo’s or keep the dancefloor flat.  This mega-club also powers nitrogen that sprays down and cools off the dancefloor like you are on some kind of space ride – you cannot see anything around you for about 10 seconds or so and that’s the best time to find a hottie and make out like its New Years.

This club puts all the other clubs in Texas to shame especially the bad managed clubs such as Station 4 in Dallas which has no boxes to dance on and no nitrogen and a smaller dancefloor.

Parties thrown at South Beach in Houston include the annual MadonnaRama , White Party, street event for Pride, Red party for Valentines Day, and many other great themed busy nights.  Madonna even plans to visit Houston this year for her concert on November 16.  I am sure this is where the afterparty will be and who knows maybe Madonna may want to check out this hot dance club (or at least her dancers).  She might hate Texas but she does not hate Houston.

Having been to many clubs internationally and here in the U.S. I found South Beach Nightclub in Houston to be ahead of then all.  The mega clubs in NYC area all gone and the real Sobe has nothing but closet type dance areas if you are not hitting a circuit party. Coliseum and the Copa in Ft. Lauderdale never came back to live after their last hurricane.  The one club that was still up and kicking was in Houston and it got battered by a hurricane as well but it will be back!

My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone at South Beach in Houston and the good people over at the 3rd Bar in Galveston.  The electricity was just recently turned back on in Houston for South Beach nightclub but they have a midnight kurfew so some of the events have been postponed according to their emails.

Charles Armstrong who has done an incredible job with the gay scene in Houston who runs South Beach im sure will do just as great of a job getting things back in order.  Some of the friendliest management and dj’s that know how to rock the crowd this has to be an exceptional place to get away from the bad things that have happened to the area.

The clubs website is their myspace at myspace.com/sobehouston.  If there is anything we can do let us know!

Earn Travel Faster? We think the Starwood American Express Card is the best for enjoying more circuit parties and more gay travel since they own the W hotel chain and Sheraton which is used for many gay functions and positioned in many cities. They also convert your hotel points to American Airline or Delta miles.

Hurricane Ends Southern Decadence, Party Goes on at Last Splash 2008

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

splash boys on lake Just like in 2005, there were lots of people partying in Austin this year who would have been in New Orleans but they may have had a big dissapointment when they arrived at the main circuit party.  Hurricane Gustav kept people from partying after Saturday but it was still fun to the people who went.   I have heard from several people that they still made it a good time and the storm just made it more crazier.

Austin threw its annual Last Splash at Lake Travis hippy hollow and it was a blast as always.  Boats, boys, booze, and dance music with mostly good weather out at the lake.  Then it was to Oil Can Harry’s and Rain for the clubbing (or bar hopping).   OCH and Rain both played fabulous music and I still think OCH has the hottest and best bartenders you can find anywhere.  One in particular who works the main bar!

thong boy butt The host hotel in Austin was the Embassy Suites which was perfect just like the Hyatt but bigger rooms and it seemed a little cheaper.  We got a free CD and gift bag with very descriptive directions to all the events when we arrived at the hotel.  Everything was perfect until we went to the main event on Saturday night which was 18 to enter but you could have thought it was a funeral home judging from the bar in the lobby area with no music.

venue It was the worst thrown party of maybe my lifetime much less 2008.  Even though it was well organized up until you actually arrived at the Monarch Event center (some lame place 15 miles away from the HOST HOTEL).  I understand that they could not have the event at the Austin Music Hall since it was bulldozed but why not just put it in a club or convention center closer to the downtown area instead of the ghetto area near 2222 and i-35.  Not only is that a bad area but I even got my car broken into before in that same area.

We walked in after all paying $40 and then waiting in line for a drink at the lobby/bar with no music.  Standing in line over 40 minutes we finally got a drink and then walked into the "event".  Ok, from someone who has been going to the Labor Day wknd Splash party for the last 5 years I was shocked to see it so lame.  It was 4 times smaller than the venue a few years ago… why not just put it inside a nightclub that was closed down or somewhere.  Anything but this Monarch center… this is where you would hold a Rotary club meeting not a circuit party with Dj Roland Belmares.  We also looked at each other and wondered why it was $40.  We then drove back to 4th street in Austin and partied at OCH and Rain for the rest of the night.  I sure miss the parties back a few years ago for Last Splash – I think the last good one was named Candy.  I think they should also have set up the event like they did in previous years where college students get a certain percentage off tickets.hippy hollow splash boys

Ohhh and did i mention we had to drive in UT football traffic to get to this venue LOL.  Disaster.com.  I can understand if a venue is next to some glamous hotel or next to something eventful but not off 2222 and i-35 that was just embarrasing for those who traveled to Austin.  I did hear that the afterhours event at Sky Lounge was a great event and well worth the $20 door cover – I was too mad to goto that after already wasting $40 but I wished I would have went to that instead.  Party info from this event can be found at Splashdays.com.

I noticed that Club Oz in New Orleans re-opens Thurs, Sept 4 for those of you returning to NOLA area.  Have a fab fall!
