First of all I will say I have attended Madonna Rama every year now for over four years and just loved it every year.  2007 was the absolute best year of Madonna Rama when they performed the Confessions opening act.  It was almost as fun going out to this club as the actual concert on this annual night.  This year was not the best mainly because I think they may have been missing a main ingredient which made the night.  The DJ Ed Bailey may have been missing because this DJ sounded nothing like previous years.  Does the til’ 10pm free cover mean they whored out the night and gave away the sacred things we love… the DJ that was there the past few years?  Us true Madonna fans still truly had an amazing time but the club dropped the ball for anyone who has been before and expected more out of the highest ranked club in the nation. =)

When we walked in the club Friday night we noticed that there was NO Signage for MadonnaRama 2009.  We asked the door people and they said it was on the floor.  They put Madonna on the FLOOR as a MAT???  I think they honestly must have had some licensing issues with Madonna’s people or they would have advertised the event more.  It was busy but not as busy as years past.  They were too busy promoting the BritneyRama the next weekend.  In years past this event was marketed way better and packed so full you could not even move.  You had to dance on the box just to dance for a few hours of the night and people would stay dancing until 4am easily.

This truly is one of my favorite clubs in the world but some things have got to be said.  These are some notes from a friend of mine who attended the event Saturday night:

They promoted DJ Ed Bailey- it was more than obvious he wasn’t there.  The DJ was nothing like Ed Bailey.  They basically played dance mixes off a CD it sounded like.  It was not the remixes we were used to.  They played Like a Virgin at least 5 times from 11:30 to 2 am.  There are lots more songs on the Madonna playlist than this boys.  Hung Up wasn’t played until 3 am after MOST of the crowd left.

The Madonna impersonator this year was more like Amanda Lepore with big boobies than Madonna.  I felt bad for her Friday because of all these stains on her pants (not lady like) then on Saturday she falls off the stage dancing.  What on earth is this about?  Doesn’t she watch RuPaul’s Drag Race.. learn some tips girl. And yes I love Amanda Lepore but not as a Madonna illusionist!!

Any time a song from ‘confessions’ came on, the dance floor was back to crowded and there was still some energy in the club like last year but lots of song repeats that were not mixed well.  I think it is better to have Madonna Rama when it is not spring break.  It seemed better attended before, when it was in April.  The video playback was a joke.  At least twice, they played the entire credits from two concert videos.  Yes, they actually played the damn credits. twice.  and let it scroll ALL THE WAY THROUGH.  This was as annyoying as the VJ at Station 4 in Dallas that puts up “Respect the Club” lectures.

The sound was not that “incredible”.  The sound system in South Beach Nightclub seems to not be as fierce as it once was.

Thank God I went do Madonna Rama in 2007, when it was amazing- if this was my first visit to madonna rama, i would not go back.  Hopefully next year they will have the DJ they promised at the very least or brought in DJ Riley who did an incredible job at the Madonna concert afterparty back in November.

Friday nights are the absolute best nights to goto Southbeach if you enjoy good progressive gay house music.  DJ Tucker is by far the clubs best asset right now along with the revamped laser lighting and nitrogen steam plunge.  The laser lights kick azz!

By the way- Madonna and Justin Timberlake are up for a IDMA Dance Music Award at the Winter Music Conference taking place this Wednesday.  Kaskade is also up for best DJ!
