Halloween Block Parties

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

If you ever wanted to try drag this is your time of the year to come “out” in costume. Just be who you want to be and get creative or go barely clothed and show off your goods while you strut around and enjoy all the attention. There is a lot of trick or treating going on and not just in our bedrooms. It is block party time and here are the hot spots.

Oaklawn, Dallas, TX
You have families and straights and gays and just about everyone attend the biggest party in Texas this weekend. This is NOT on Halloween weekend it is on the weekend before Halloween because they judge the costume contest finale the following weekend on Halloween. This block party is located in between the streets Throckmorton and Oaklawn on Cedar Springs where you will see thousands of people walking the dark carpet with their costumes then a dance party in the streets. Tiesto will also be in town to party afterwards at the Palladium ballroom. Here are some photos of last year’s Oaklawn Halloween Block party.

Fruit Loop, Las Vegas, NV
Fruit Loop block party takes place in Las Vegas where most of the gay businesses are located. Starting at 8pm on Saturday, October 31 there will be an outdoor stage, dance tent, games to play, and a haunted house. The Fruit Loop is located at Naples Street and Paradise in fabulous Las Vegas. Live entertainment hosted by Shawn M and Coco Vega and Street Fair presented by Piranha, Free Zone, Gipsy, Get Booked, and 8 ½ lounge.

West Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA
This is the big daddy of all the Halloween block parties but be prepared to not be able to wrestle through this crowd with an oversized costume. Santa Monica Boulevard will be filled with excitement on Halloween night as hundreds of thousands of Halloween revelers are expected to flock to the famous boulevard for the notorious West Hollywood Halloween Costume Carnaval on Saturday, October 31, 2009 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Labor Day 2009: We Danced, We Splashed, We Kissed

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Had so much fun this past Labor Day weekend 2009.  We went to Austin, TX for what they call the Last Splash weekend.  Splash includes the boats all tied together down at hippy hollow on the edge of Lake Travis, one of the most beautiful places in the world.  You can pay for a party barge boat or just hop from boat to boat and basically play musical boats drinking your way to the sundown.

We found ourselves on a boat that had an open bar and lots of boys.  I am not sure what the guy does who owns the boat but he makes a damn good living with a plasma TV inside and a air-conditioned living room… I think this is more of a yacht.

The lake was not so full this year because of the draught but we had fun floating around on our noodles in the nice perfect-temperature lake water.  Nothing is more relaxing that drinking ice cold beer and just floating around in the water at Hippie Hollow/Lake Travis.  Saturday did not seem as busy this year but Sunday the parking lot was overflowing and the boats were packed with tight boys in suits and some in their birthday suits (oh and yes this is the ONLY beach in Texas that allows for you to rock out with your cock out).

Splash weekend also includes barhopping at Oil Can Harry’s and Rain on 4th street with that small lounge in between the two.  While it is 18 and up at OCH and Rain you have to pay a cover unlike at the bigger club down the street called Kiss and Fly.  Oil Can’s or OCH had Tony Moran Friday and we walked over to Kiss and Fly to see Crystal Waters perform her 100% Pure Love hit.

We spent most of the weekend at Kiss and Fly and enjoyed the hot and talented bartender and saw the most amazing Britney Spears performance on Sunday.  I will say this is the Drag Queen of the Year and not sure her name (shame on me).  She was amazing and looked just like Britney and lip synched just like Brit as well.  She came down from one of the birdcages at Kiss and Fly performing the Circus song.  She is for sure the best drag queen or female impersonator I have ever seen in Texas.

If that was not enough we were so tired at this point from the lake and dancing so hard at Kiss and Fly someone talked me into going to the circuit party afterhours event.  I hesitated and then said what can it hurt I am worn out and doubt I would stay long.  Ended up being some of the best music I have heard this year at any event (do I always say that?.. no). DJ Roland Belmares, originally from Austin, who resides in LA were some of the big name DJ’s over the weekend but Seth Cooper finished off the events.  Afterhours was held in the Sky Lounge until around 6am or so? I know I stayed until close and danced my azz off.  He played an amazing remix of Taylor Swift and many others.

Another great year in Austin for Splash and can’t wait until next year.

Sasha and Digweed to headline Black and Blue Festival

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Looks like the Black and Blue festival just got some major international acclaim. If you love trance music you will not want to miss the festival this year in Montreal Canada.

True to its mandate of organizing large multimedia events and seeking to spur the enthusiasm of an audience of ever increasing sophistication, BBCM Foundation takes great pleasure in announcing that the DJs for the main Black & Blue Festival event to be held at Palais des Congrès on Sunday, October 11th will be Sasha, John Digweed (two of the top ten DJs in the world according to DJMag’s top 100 list) and Dave Seaman from the UK, and Montréalers Franco Fabi and Stéfane Lippé. An announcement earlier this summer to this effect triggered a wave of ticket buying and provided advance indication that the 2009 Festival promises to be a hit with attendees. This year’s Black & Blue will showcase a concept dubbed ‘LITE Switch’ which was developed around the theme of light in collaboration with lighting design expert François Roupinian of Lightemotion. The light immersion concept, intended as the sole backdrop for the dance floor, is designed to create a realm unto itself and an extraordinary experience for participants. The main Black & Blue evening event will include a block-buster show segment, as well as theme-based entertainment. This year’s main show, ‘Switch Me On’, will be directed by Mika of Théâtre POD and choreographed by Jean-Marc St-Yves.

Gay Days 2009 Wrap-up

We pretty much did what we said we would do on our gay days schedule this year.  We hit up Pulse nightclub on Wednesday night and it was packed as always.  Then tried to hit up Revolution but they were having a “girls” party so we thought we better goto Phouse instead and it was packed beyond belief for a Thursday night.  They were having the Pleasure Island Mannequin’s party out on the patio/poolside area.  You could barely move.  We also hear that the Hard Rock was fun Thursday but we wanted to stay in the downtown area the first night.

Friday rolled around with the pool party at the Buena Vista that was ok.  Nothing like last year I guess they have changed things around where there are no more live performances and the pool party was moved from  one side to another making it look smaller than last year.  It was still fun and lots of eye candy. The Sunday pool party may have been a bit bigger then there was even people still around the pool on Monday.

Friday night was Typhoon Lagoon and if you weren’t there then you just missed out.  It was as big as it is every year and Lydia Prim did a great job as always.  They moved the dance floor this year to the sandy area in front of the wave pool which made for a little change.  They threw a great last minute event without all the normal lighting you get but it didn’t really matter because the boys were happy to “Let’s Go Play” over at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon.

The Buena pool area was not that congested for their ridiculous competitor party at $95 called Beach Ball Luau.  They really had the nerve to charge $95 for a blow up Hawaiian lady dancing on both sides of the stage and some lights.  I mean really??  I think most everyone got refunds or just jumped in the pool and drowned themselves from the money they wasted.

Saturday night of course belonged to Deborah Cox.  She said she loved us a few times and we can feel it when she sings for us.  She sung her number one hit Beautiful U R.  Beautiful U R should be one of the biggest hits of the summertime fun in 2009.  It was beautiful watching her perform below the full moon and sparkling waters of the Phouse pool.

We heard the Kelly Rowland performance was also good and she sung several songs over at the Buena Vista Palace ballroom. Props to the Johnny Chisholm crew for throwing one good event over the weekend besides the pool parties.

Sunday night we heard was dead over at the Palace ballroom and the House of Blues party.  Lots of feedback they were pretty lame so most people probably just went to have fun in their rooms and get to Arabian Nights Magic Journeys early.

Magic Journeys Arabian Nights Sunday night pretty much stole away the entire weekend though.  I will say Peter Rauhofer did an amazing job.  Normally Sunday nights are sketchy and bitchy but this year it was fun and not as crowded…much more room to dance but still perfectly busy.  It was the best Sunday night party I have ever been to at gay days.  I had to keep asking who was djing because he was making everyone dance as hard as possible.. Amazing job.  Although we could have done without the fire alarm drills three times during the last few hours.  I may never miss a Sunday night afterparty again after this years!

Happy Gay Days 2009!

Planning Ahead for 2010

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

You really have to plan ahead to get the best deals sometimes at least that’s how it used to be.  Maybe not so much anymore if you don’t mind flying coach you can get deals last minute for cheap.  Booking hotels is the biggest obstacle so you have to know months in advance if you want to book a party at say the White Party in Palm Springs or the Gay Ski Weeks.  Sometimes people do not understand you have to plan ahead for things and you can’t sit around until the last minute to go which is why we miss out on so many parties.  Of course not this far ahead but at least a month or so ahead. ..

I am always up for trying out new events and love to meet new people and see new and exciting things.  Some of the events are hard to make because they fall on a big weekend with tons of other things going on that are more close to home or just more convenient.  The hardest events to make are always the gay ski weeks and January and February events.  Why are these so hard to make?  There is so much going on during Spring Break and the week’s right before that.

WinterPRIDE (estimated near February 1-8)

The event that is the top of my list that I really want to attend in 2010 is the annual WinterPRIDE in Whistler, Canada.  The Whistler WinterPRIDE is one of the largest gay ski weeks worldwide and even emphasizes health and wellness something we can all use.  Of course, it still has all the naughtiness at nighttime we all need.  They have a Mr. Gay World Competition and a closing night party.  Canada also has 19 to drink laws so you don’t have the ridiculous 21 and up laws to deal with if you bring someone who is considered too young to drink in the United States.  The beauty and awe are just a few of the things I expect to see in the gorgeous mountains in Whistler.

San Francisco Pride

This is an event I will probably not make it to for years just because it falls on the same weekend as Houston pride and Columbus Pride.  I already am dying to see Houston pride because it’s a nighttime parade and that itself sounds exciting.  San Francisco may have one of the largest pride parades but Columbus really impressed me they way they have their Community festival next door to the pride which made it more exciting.  Especially exciting if you’re a lesbian there are lots of bare breasts scooting along the street.  I will make it to San Fran pride someday but do want to make sure they have a club big enough for more than 100 people if I do travel up California that far north.

Fire Island Pines

Just looking at the pictures from this event make me want to go to this Summer festival.

P-Town, MA

This is an island you ride a ferry to from Boston.  This I hear is a treasure of many gays and lesbians all in one spot.

White Party Palm Springs

They celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Jeffrey Sanker party this year and had a pool party with Nikki Harris and the Perry Twins with the headlining performer of Lady Gaga.  For Lady Gaga this was the second year she had performed and she is the crowned Pop Princess from Perez Hilton.  She took that award from Britney Spears who lip-syncs or mimes as Australians call it.  There is no lip-syncing going on when Lady Gaga performs.   They also had J-Lo (Jennifer Lopez) perform there a few years back.

I doubt Jeffrey Sanker can come up with something better than Lady Gaga for 2010 for their 21st anniversary but we will see.  To me… nothing is grander than Lady Gaga.  Well ok maybe Madonna.  If he gets Madonna I will make a bet right now to pay for me and 10 of my friends to go.  My problem with the white party is the fact they have nothing planned on Friday nights but a pool party in the daytime ran by Club Papi.  The clubs look too small or leather clubs (not the ones im used to) to deal with on a Friday night.  The Wyndham makes you book two night minimum and the other host hotel the Hotel Zoso sells out fast.  Another gripe about the Wyndham is their sales people leave at a ridiculous 3:30pm – who gets off work that early!

Mardi Gras Sydney, Australia

Some call it the largest gay party in the world.  Australia is one of the most conservative countries when it comes to online porn but maybe they are more open minded when it comes to this party.  Over half a million people attend for three weeks of non-stop partying.    This party goes on around February 14 to March 7th.  Somehow the timing of this interferes with just about everything including tax preparation for me every year.  I would love to go sometime though if I can find someone who wants to fly for 20 hours on the plane and spend at least a week over in Aussie land.  I know there will be some babes over there to check out.  The weather is supposed to be Summer there during this time so it’s the perfect time to get out of the US and warm up a bit.

GLBT Expo

I would love to attend a GLBT Expo this year or next year.  I think it would be great to see the mainstream gay things in the works and meet the advertisers and event sponsors.  You know none of these big events are normally possible without Red Bull, Bacardi, Absolut, or someone to sponsor these big gatherings.  A few years back I attended the Nightclub Convention in Las Vegas and had such a good time going around to the booths (and trying the next new drink flavors).  The annual AVN Expo is something to check out.  These can all be pricey but worth it in the learning experience.

Chicago Northalsted Marketdays

This is the event in the BoysTown area of Chicago that is not to be missed.  It is high time that we made this event and hope to see it for ourselves in 2010.  Chicago is an incredible city to be a part of during the warmer months of course.  Marketdays is a celebration of a variety of things with fair like booths set up to enjoy and browse.  Market Days is located between N. Halsted street, between Belmont and Addison | Chicago from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m normally the first weekend in August.    BeBe Zahara Benet and Jade performed Saturday & Sunday, August 1-2, 2009 which you missed if you were not there.

London, London, London

I want to go to London more.  I am saving my frequent flyer miles just for the first class or upgrades to London.  G-A-Y is where I will be and could almost live there.  I love big things, especially big clubs.  I just can’t stand cold weather and unless there is a reason for me to be in the cold like learning to ski I think this might be a better place to see when its Spring or Summer.

Other annual events I have missed and want to attend are EuroPride, LA Pride, and Black & Blue Montreal.  Believe it or not I had to miss another one of my favorite parties this year in Pensacola, FL and the hot club Emerald City.  I sure did not like missing Pensacola Beach but accidents happen.

Party like it’s 2009

Most important of all… What about the last day of 2009?  New Years this year could be the biggest event in a decade since 1999.  You might should start booking your New Years Eve party now- airfare, hotel, and seeing what parties are out there.  We have not heard of any yet but I am sure there will be tons of huge events thrown to bring in the next decade.

One Mighty Weekend Changes to Gay Days 2009

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Everyone is talking about the changes to the One Mighty Weekend party coming up Gay Days week in Orlando the first week of June.  There have been so many rumors floating around about the entire event being canceled and even rumors saying that the Buena Vista Palace hotel will no longer be the host hotel of all things.  These have all turned out to be untrue for the most part.  There has been some major changes to their major events though some very dramatic.

The good news is the pool parties at Buena Vista Palace will still be going on during the days.  We will still be able to walk out of our hotel rooms and dance, drink, and get some sun.  Which is really the best part of the entire weekend anyway.  Although that pool party just got extended to a Luau to replace the typhoon lagoon party at night that Friday night.  They better be bringing in a big name performer if they plan to keep people happy from not doing Typhoon Lagoon or finding a waterpark such as Sea World.  I like the idea of being able to walk from my hotel room to the Luau party but I am not so sure it will be as fun as the Typhoon Lagoon Beach Ball party we love so much every year.

The rest of the events look ok.. one of them moved over to the Gaylord which is a nice resort but its not MGM or Disney.  The Arabian Nights afterparties stay the same and these should be fun.  I hope they fix their relationship with Disney next year and get things back together if possible.   I can already tell you ill be spending most the weekend nights in Orlando at the P house going to the pool parties in the day at the Buena Vista resort.

The City After Dark party sounds interesting where they say it is amidst a 60,000 square feet of concrete and steel at the Gaylord Palms and will have extreme stunt performers.  Although I have seen and seen and seen so more stunt performers than I wish to see… bring me out a gay diva and that will be a performance.  Bring us some Lady Gaga or a Kristine W performance since the venue is not MGM, Epcot, or Disney.  Or hey what about Elton John and Lady Gaga duo since this does benefit Elton’s charity.

The Sunday night event will be at the Buena Vista Palace hotel with RosAbel djing with shows like Freezeburn and Runway called Deep Blue World immersing you into the depths of the sea.

Interesting changes and slightly disappointing to say the least but what can we do.  The One Mighty weekend site also says to watch for celebrity performers.. maybe something will come out of that as well!

I can tell you my schedule for my Gay Days weekend and here it goes:

Wednesday, Pulse Nightclub (near downtown Orlando) 18+
Thursday, Revolution Nightclub (off Bumby street) 18+
Friday, June 5, Buena Vista Palace Beach Ball Luau DJ Joe  Gauthreaux
Sat, June 6 – Buena Vista Palace Pool Party DJ Roland Belmares
Sat, June 6 – Deborah Cox at Parliament House at 1am
Sun, June 7 – Buena Vista Palace Pool Party DJ Phil B
Sun, June 7 – Parliament House Jennifer Holliday with no cover til 8pm
AFTERHOURS Sun, June 8– Magic Journeys DJs Peter Rauhofer and Offer Nissam

Lady Gaga Does The White Party

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

There were so many cool things going on at the White Party this year for the 20th Anniversary.   You had Chi Chi Larue DJing in one room and then you walk in the other room and hear one of the hottest circuit DJ’s before and after Lady Gaga.  This is after a day of partying at the poolside to Erasure’s Andy Bell spinning and an Amazing performance from those hunky Perry Twins and Nikki Harris.  Wow!

You almost could not have asked for a better DJ line up.  I will have to hand it to Jeffrey Sanker for throwing one first class party.  It certainly exceeded my expectations.  I was not even going to stay Sunday night but ended up staying for the after party to the T-Dance.  Rosabel was playing for this event and you had boxes to dance on and it was lots of fun.

Ana Paula spun after the Lady Gaga performance and kept the energy going so hard that everyone could barely stand after dancing on Saturday night.  It was great to be able to go to the Chi Chi LaRue room and hear different music to change it up.  I love to be able to do that.

We waited for Lady Gaga so long that we stood in the crowd from around midnight to 2am when she finally came on stage.  Some friends went to go get a last drink at 1:30 and I said no she will be on stage at 2 so you better hurry the hell up.  If we would have only known she did not come on until 2am we would have not been waiting so long without any water or drink at all.  No one wanted to leave the area fearing they would miss Gaga.  Well all the thirst was worth it because Gaga put on the most amazing performance ever for this kind of venue.  This girl can sing, dance, and be the sexiest thing on the planet at the same time.

Gaga talked to us a few times during the performance.  And I should call it a concert because it was a full fledged concert not just a club performance that you might have expected.  She actually had her piano out playing with her heels up in the air.  Doing things I thought only Jerry Lee Lewis could do but wearing big bubbles around her.  She let us know that she advocated gay rights with gay marriage and told everyone what she thought of Proposition 8.  She told us that she loved playing for gay crowds and that was certainly obvious because you could tell she wanted to ‘Just Dance’ with us all night long.

She played Poker place twice.. once the piano version and then ended the show with the Poker face mix that was very hot.  This ranks up there in one of the best shows I have seen in all time because of her creativity, energy, and love for everyone.

The White Party has rocked out with Jennifer Lopez and other performers in the past and is a great event with Dj’s and the fierce entertainers. The White Party was a truly amazing experience and not many words can describe what we felt when the baddest diva to come out in a long time took the stage.

Check out one of these pictures on the left you see Lady Gaga come out and have a drink at 3am or so and tease us all with her wine.  She looks a little like Britney used to look in this pic… I love the outfit and hat.  She actually downed that wine.  Love it!

Want more Gaga? Here are some more pics from the west coast White Party.
