One cool thing to know about the Netherlands is that you can use your phone’s tap-to-pay feature to ride trains, trams and buses. At least this was true for all public modes of transport in Utrecht and the trains from/to Amsterdam and the airport. That, plus the fact that trains run often means that no planning is really needed. Want to pop over to Amsterdam from Utrecht to see a museum? No problem. Google Maps will accurately show you which train to get on and you can simply tap your phone on the way onto the train and again on the way out. Sometimes a conductor will come through to ask for your ticket and you can simply tap his device to validate your “ticket.”
