Sometimes you don’t want to be caught up inside a club full of people celebrating a bachelorette party or a place that has a dress code that is outrageous that plays the same top ten song over and over. Your intention is not to get blistering drunk and you really want to go somewhere and dance to some good music. You want to dance as long as you can into the night and want to go somewhere that feels sexy, filled with energy, but dark and takes you away into another dimension.
While gay clubs have some of the best dj’s most of the time there are so many of them that give in to playing basically what you will hear over and over on the radio. Sometimes they may not even have a good mix to that song. Where can you go listen to music and dance with beautiful men and women that are there for that very reason? Places where you go not to be judged but to dance?
Keep in mind that the security at all of these clubs may be a bit judgemental but for good reason. The first club that comes to everyone’s mind would be Berghain in Berlin. This list mostly focuses on clubs in the United States so let’s do this:
#1 Berlin Nightclub in Chicago. If you find a better club in the U.S. that has theme nights and good dj’s at least three nights a week and stays open until 4am then please let us know. The Chicago Times calls Berlin “Chicago’s best non-gay gay bar” which has been around more than 30 years as “the epicenter of pansexual nightclub parties with a week of events that resurrects some of the most popular themes from the club’s iconic history.”
A gay man and a straight woman opened Berlin in 1983 because they wanted somewhere to go where everyone was welcome. The goal of Berlin was to make it as diverse as possible where no one cared who anyone else slept with. Thus creating a safe space for those who just didn’t fit in a mold and looking for nightlife options other than leather bars or “sweater bars.”
This club is located in Boystown (gayborhood in Chicago, IL) right next to the train/subway station not far from where the Cubs Wrigley Stadium. You will find everything from Goth, Drag Queens, Transgender, Gay, Straight, Bi-Sexual, Lesbian, to um… those Madonna and Robyn groupies. Yes, they have monthly Madonna parties every first Sunday called MadonnaRama with DJ Riley York. They also have Robyn themed nights. So you can Dance On Your Own and Vogue until 4am even when it’s below 5 outside.
They only take cash so don’t plan on getting any credit card rewards while listening to good music.
